Traditional and / Contemporary (?)

Postby shreyosi » Tue Jun 01, 2010 1:41 pm

Watching Deguchi's Timon of Athens almost propels me to question whether the production is tradional or contemporary. While watching the production I was convinced how traditional it was, especially in its close resemblance to the Shakespearean text and apparent formality of the production. But my initial impressions were put under serious question once I used the site to explore the production-related data which pointed to a very eclectic mixture of period references. Shingeki which is the dominant art form of this production, literally translates as "New Theatre".
On the other hand a production like HwaDong's Coriolanus which appears to be extremely post-modern in its treatment makes use of the dominant and more familiar artform namely naturalism. This leaves me with a persistent question and problem of classification as to what is traditional and what contemporary and what are the parameters of the classification.
How would you like to classify the productions or would you like it classify at all? Share your views.
